Can AI do your taxes?

An assistant will prepare a tax return from a W2 and a handful of 1099s, fill in Form 1040, arrive at a balance due, and tell you the return is complete. It answers in under a second and none of the arithmetic is wrong.

Almost. Not quite. However. No AI can sign a return as its preparer, represent you before the IRS, or carry the penalty if the return is wrong. All three stay with you.

What shows up is not an error message. It is CP14, then CP501, CP503, CP2000, CP504, LT11, CP71, CP22A, over about twenty months, with the balance climbing the whole way. Two years of quiet is not the same as getting it right.
